The Philippine Embassy in Mexico attended the Commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the return to Mexico of the 201st Air Fighter Squadron of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force held at Parque Alameda Solidaridad in Cuernavaca, Morelos on 18 November 2024.
A ceremony, accompanied by a wreath-laying and poem reading, commemorated the return to Mexico of Squadron 201 on 18 November 1945, after aiding the Allied powers during the Second World War and helping in the liberation of Luzon. A minute of silence was observed in memory of the Squadron’s five fallen fighters.
First Secretary Ralf G. Roldan delivered a message highlighting the Squadron's valiant efforts, mentioning that it shows the strong bonds of friendship and unity that the Philippines and Mexico have had through the years. The First Secretary remarked that “history does not only have to be a static reminder of the past but should be a continuous reflection of how we forge the future for all of us”.
After the ceremony, a small exhibit of Squadron and war memorabilia was showcased. Some items that were displayed were uniforms and photos from the war.
The event was organized by the Agrupamiento Familiares y Amigos del Escuadron 201 headed by Dr. Roberto Yañez Vázquez, son of Squadron 201 First Sergeant Gunsmith Juan Bautista Yañez Camarena. END.
